ITGULFCOAST is hosting its regular monthly lunch and learn meeting on Wednesday, October 26th. Our guest speaker is John Connor who will present an indepth look at Go, a new programming language released by Google in 2009.
Go is a modern compiled language built with concurrency and systems programing in mind. It has a clean C-like syntax, a latency free garbage collector, and is both type-safe and memory-safe.
In July of 2011, Google released a Go SDK for the Google App Engine, allowing Go applications to be hosted on Google’s infrastructure and allowing access to the App Engine APIs. Although Go is a powerful language with a wealth of libraries it has so far seen surprisingly little adoption. In an effort to help spread the word about this new language this presentation will cover:
- the short but interesting history of Go
- Go’s strengths and weaknesses
- basic Go syntax
- basic Go program structure
At the end of the presentation an example program will be analyzed and deployed to the Google App Engine.

John Connor is a software developer for AppRiver, where he is a member of the SecureSurf team. He has over a decade of experience in architecting and administering secure and scalable systems for clients such as the U.S. Navy and The Department of Defense.

This meeting will be held at the Gulf Coast Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (PSC Downtown ) conference room on the 4th floor. 418 W Garden Street, Pensacola FL. The meeting starts at 11:30 am and ends at 1:00 pm. The cost for lunch is $12 per person. The fee to attend without lunch is $5 per person.
